Oak Winding Staircases
Made out of solid oak, finished with whitewash.
Three staircases, partly with closed risers and partly without for an “open” staircase effect. The staircase is designed like a traditional Amsterdam staircase housing (free Dutch translation), except that it is open on all the floors. Starting point for the final design was the old Amsterdam canal house. This shows best in the picture of the second floor, where the solid-newel jumps horizontally through use of two mirrored concave shapes. This was necessary to connect the staircase between the existing joists of two floors.
These stairs are made like they have been made for hundreds of years: first a full-sized top- and sideview is drawn, then all sizes, angles and curves are transferred directly from this drawing to the wood.
